If the 'discovery' stage identifies sufficient hydro potential then the next step is a full feasibility study.  These vary enormously and are dependent on the scale of the opportunity and the complexity of the site.  However, the key features addressed are:

  • Conducting a flow measurement survey of the targeted site – depending upon estimated scale of the scheme and prevailing SEPA requirements (currently under review)

  • Environmental Surveys

  • Habitat Surveys – possibilities are; otter, bats and red squirrel

  • Topographical Survey – to produce a plan of the site

  • Initial Grid Connection opinion from SSE or Scottish Power

  • Refinement of the design of the scheme

  • Refinement of the costs

  • Liaison and negotiation with Statutory Bodies - Local Authority Planning Department, SEPA, and SNH

  • Consultation with local residents

  • Preparation of a Method Statement describing how the project will be carried and thus the potential impacts and risks

The output for the Feasibility Stage is a fully documented assessment of the opportunity and the required documents and evidence to enable progress to the next stage – Planning & Approvals
